On Saturday the rain let up but fog took it's place. We set off for a hike around 10 a.m. assuming the fog would break, leaving us with spectacular views. We did have amazing views...of fog. I didn't know fog could exist at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Lesson learned.
Some short snippets from our hike:

We took a moment to appreciate the view from the top of Mt Penebscot. Were it clear, you would be able to see the Atlantic Ocean, Jordan Pond, and Cadillac Mtn (the highest mountain on the East Coast and the first place the sun touches in the U.S. each morning).
We both agreed this was a very fun trail - all granite, lots of "rock climbing." However it also became extremely dangerous near the end; it started pouring and granite is slick. Plus the trail down turned into a creek. By the bottom we were soaked. It was like I'd taken my jeans straight out of the washer, put them on, and decided to go play outside. It's comparable to wearing 50 lbs of shrink wrap.

A small pond on our way up. We didn't see it until we were literally standing at the pond's edge. And it was mid-afternoon.
So our first hike was a success. No twisted ankles at least. It would have been nice to have some clear views but the fog gave it a certain mystique. And it wasn't crowded. In 7 hours of hiking we passed only one other person and their dog.
