Two weeks ago I took my first official work trip - to Michigan! {Thrilling I know...please contain your excitement}. National Geographic isn't just diving to the ocean's depths and rescuing chimpanzees and summitting K2 - it's also spending a night in Muskegon. A town that seems almost dead. And then traveling to Cadillac, a town that is slightly more alive but still nothing to write home about.

This was the view from my hotel in Muskegon. At 8:00 am on a Tuesday morning. In the heart of downtown. It was obviously rush hour. But soon all these bustling Muskegonites will be enjoying their very own maps of the nearby Manistee-Huron National Forests, created by yours truly. And then there will be rejoicing in the streets, followed by a mass exodus into the forest with their ATV's and fishing poles in hand. Or perhaps the exodus has already occurred. Seriously, where is everyone?
My co-workers will be making trips to Banff, Jasper, and Yellowstone National Parks. So while my maps are actually fairly interesting {if you like snowmobiling, dirt biking, and lounging along scenic rivers in your fishing boats} I may have drawn the short straw on exciting travel locales. But that's okay - my boss brought us all cookies. And ice cream. And that was just for this week. And then we all left early on Friday to enjoy the warm weather. We're spoiled.
