Part of our time in Portland was spent hiking. The outdoors, especially mountains, have a very strong pull on Mark and I, and there is no better mountainous playground than the Cascades.
Mt Hood is an hour's drive from Portland and unlike our trip here last October, we were actually able to see the thing. It was thrilling. We did a 2-mile round trip trail to Mirror Lake, saw Mt Hood's reflection, took 2 million pictures, and then continued on to the famous Timberline Lodge to get a closer look at my favorite volcano {is it weird to have a favorite volcano?}.
From Timberline Lodge you can meet up with the Pacific Crest Trail and get a closer look at Mt Hood, but when you're this close you really lose all perspective of it's enormous size. We quite enjoy the fact that Mt Hood actually creates its own weather, as evident by its giant cloud patch. I also enjoyed that there is a Tom Dick and Harry Mountain. Who are those guys anyway? On Saturday, after Farmer Marketing, we went east again, this time to the Columbia River Gorge. We saw a lot of waterfalls while here last fall, but decided to throw in another, Elowah Falls, for good measure.
And on a random side note, do you see the kid on the bench in the picture below? He's playing a video game while Multnomah Falls, only the second highest waterfall in the country, lies just a few feet behind him. What's happening to kids today...
Granted, Mark and I just stopped here to eat a little ice cream and didn't get any closer to the falls than this picture. But we'd seen it before; hiked to the top in fact. This was merely a calorie stop with a pretty backdrop.

That's an awesome jumping picture! I'm also impressed with the amount of sites you saw there. I went to Portland earlier this year, and only made it to Voodoo donuts!
