A Journey :: Santorini

We spent our second week on the islands of Santorini and Naxos, both gorgeous, and both incredibly different. Santorini is part of an active volcano, and the main town of Fira, where we stayed, is built into the side of a cliff on the caldera's rim. We loved it here so much we stayed an extra day, eating at Nikolas, the best restaurant in town, walking the narrow, cobbled streets, and soaking up more vitamin D than our bodies could handle.

For this leg of our journey, we were joined by two of our dearest friends, Lottie and Guillaume (introduced on our blog here). Lottie and I started planning this trip (or rendez-boo) last fall after a painfully short visit in Atlanta in '09. One English gal, a Frenchman, and two Southerners makes for a very good, very funny week. Especially when there's ping pong, some cards, and lots of walking to be had. Plus, Lottie's just plain nuts.

We took a boating excursion to the newest island formed by the volcano, less than a mile out, to view some fresh lava. Unless you've never seen a lava flow, I would save the 18 euros and do something else. But should you go, it's 5 euros to ride a donkey from the sea floor back up to town. We opted to walk instead. My advice: Take the donkey. And some sunscreen. Or at least a nice scarf.
