A Journey :: Mt Zeus

Our trip culminated with a hike up Mt Zeus, a fitting end to our travels. Mt Zeus, the peak pictured below, is the highest in the Cyclades (our little island group) and contains the cave where Zeus was supposedly raised. My guidebook mentioned the cave was filled with giant yellow bugs, so only Mark was brave enough to venture beyond the entryway. The climb was difficult, made worse by the fact we lost the trail halfway up. But all the effort was well worth it, offering fantastic, albeit windy, views of Naxos and the surrounding sea.

Because Naxos is rather large and time was tight, we rented a car to venture inland toward Mt Zeus, visiting small villages along the way. It was decided that Guillaume would drive...

Of course, had the boys not been with us, Lottie and I would have rather flown...

At the top of Zeus is a notebook where people have recorded their ascent to the top, most claiming victory over the mountain, which we did as well. Zeus must have been particularly grumpy this day because he almost blew us off the mountain. After a few short minutes at the top, we booked it back down, following the correct trail for a change, and explored a bit more of Naxos by car before returning to town.

Um, Lottie, what are you doing?

Taking a rest on Mt. Zas descent (!)... Problem was once I laid down at this angle I then couldn't get back up unaided and scraped my tummy trying to slide down. I was too embarrassed to share my Lottie moment until now!! lol!
