John Day: Sheep Rock Unit

Welcome to sunny eastern Oregon!

There is this crazed rumor that east of the Cascades, the sun is always shining. This belief is so widespread that every time I return to work after several days east of the mountains and tell my coworkers it rained {which it has for each of my four trips}, they all look completely shocked. "Really? It rained? It never rains in eastern Oregon."...hmm, nice try but you can't fool me.

But seeing as to how we're practically aquatic at this point, we put on our raincoats and headed out anyway, hiking along a short trail through what I can only describe as alien terrain. I've never seen anything quite like it {the Badlands in South Dakota come close, but they aren't so weirdly green}.

And since this land is owned by the National Park Service, it was riddled with informative signs. Below are two positions you are guaranteed to find Mark in, should you ever hike with him along a similar trail.

1. Reading every word, and 2. Picking up every rock. At his pace, it can easily take two hours to walk a fourth of a mile.
